Harelson runs for another term
By Stacy D. Stumbo of the Daily Courier

John Harelson, incumbent Josephine County treasurer and tax collector,
has announced he is running for one more term of office.

Harelson was first elected in 1996 and ran successfully for re-election in
2000 and 2004.

If re-elected, Harelson will be the second-longest serving elected official in
Josephine County government.

County Clerk and Recorder Georgette Brown is the longest serving
elected official at 25 years. She announced in September she would not
seek re-election.

Harelson said he has worked to improve the county's ability to serve its
citizens. He has participated in management committees and worked as
acting chief financial officer and budget officer during long-term vacancies
in those appointed positions.

Harelson said he has acted as a welcome, and sometimes
not-so-welcome, adviser to seven commissioners. If re-elected, he said
he will use his experience and skills to help other elected officials,
government employees and citizens work toward a solution to the criminal
justice funding crisis facing the county.

Harelson is a certified public accountant with 39 years experience in
accounting, management and finance.

He has been active in the community since 1976, serving on the governing
boards of the Heart Association, Rotary Club of Grants Pass, Community
Development Corporation of Josephine County, Josephine Memorial
Hospital, Rogue Community College and the Rogue Valley Civic League.
Harelson and his wife, Verna, have been married for 44 years.
