John Harelson, incumbent Josephine County
treasurer and tax collector, has announced he is
running for one more term of office.
The Oregon Secretary of State's Elections Division
has dismissed a complaint filed by a candidate for
Josephine County treasurer less than a week after it
was filed.
It is true that the entire current 2007-2008 county budget
totals a bit over $101 million. It is also true that a bit over
$53 million of this budget comes from outside sources.
Nearly $30 million is carry-over reserves (think savings
accounts), and $18 million is internal transfers between
county departments (required by accounting rules). The
majority of these outside revenues and reserves are
dedicated funds, which can be spent on only certain
activities.

This choice is easy: Harelson.
Harelson said that Matthews, who has served as
treasurer of two clubs and iTV, lacks the experience to
manage a budget of between $30 million and $60
million. He said being "the county's banker" is a highly
technical job.
"I'm flabbergasted by everything that comes out of
this man's mouth," Harelson said before citing his
own nearly-four-decades of experience as another
reason to vote against Matthews. "The most
important thing is to tell the truth always, and most
of what comes out of his mouth isn't the truth."
